I slowly opened my eyes and moaned. A bee buzzed in my ear and a shook my head to shoo it away. The sun shone right in my line of vision and blinded me momentarily. I shifted my shoulders and rolled onto my knees, not wanting to get up off of the soft, white sand. Looking around I realized I was on a beach far from home. The smooth sand looked like milk stretched for miles in each direction. Behind me was a glimmering pale ocean with massive waves forming and breaking far out from the shore. The beach itself was surrounded by towering trees and foliage with several cliffs scattered here and there. Everything was so perfect..so still.. and so very beautiful. 'Am I..dead?' I wondered, picking myself up off of the heated sand and looked to my right and left. I knew from the pain in my temples and hooves that I was definitely alive. I decided to head towards the forest in search of food and fresh water.
I flashed back to the memory- the earthquake. That morning the sense of danger had filled all of our souls. Even the birds seemed restless. I was standing on a ledge surrounding our cove when it happened. The earth seemed to awake and let out a roar. Everything around me blurred as I tried to keep my balance on the unstable gravel. But one solid slip on the loose pebbles and I was off the cliff into the ocean. I tumbled around and around in the waves of the furious sea. Somehow, someway I had found a large piece of soggy, dark driftwood to cling to. I could tell I was being carried out far in the ocean, and there was no way I could paddle back. Dizziness hit me and I blacked out.
When I woke up I was here, on this beach. I reached the edge of the forest and looked back, wondering who had saved me and taken me here. Trudging further in the green magical jungle I saw something shimmer to my right. I approached it and realized that it was fresh water. I quickly dipped my muzzle in and gulped it down, the cool water soothing my parched throat. Then I submerged my delicate frame into the liquid. I saw that the pond was very round, slightly small, and so crystal clear that I could see the delightful water plants growing on the shallow bottom. The water felt soo good on my temples and sore tendons, and I decided to soak for a while longer. Finally I started to felt energized enough to get out and search for shelter. The only thing was I wasn't sure were to go now- I had lost my herd and my home. I thought a heard a sound and tossed my head up, looking around. It was a voice, telling me to go north. The whisper came from all directions. I wasn't sure if I was hallucinating or imagining things, but I knew from the growing feeling in my heart that I should continue onward. Something told me there was a good thing awaiting me. I rose to my feet and headed North, and to what I would later find out-my new herd.
